  1. Question: What affects do online games have towards the gamer?

Hypothesis: Being extremely addicted to an online game leads to problematic behaviour.

Source 3: Helen Dumont "Video Game Play and Addiction". MBR Bookwatch. FindArticles.com. 15 Jul, 2009. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0SFB/is_2009_March/ai_n31584676/
Summary: Addictive gamers are so preocuppied that their virtual actions might become reality and their life has a high chance to become depressing, lonely, and quiet.
Synthesis: Stating that addictive gaming leads to violent and distrubing results are similar to every article that i have researched; however this article is slightly different because it talks about moments of depression and loneliness because the gamer has less interest in spending time with family and being social. Many teenagers have that experience.
Critique: I believe this source because I have seen teenagers act the way this article explains it. Also i too have experienced addiction and definately know what its like to face these negative feelings.

Source 4: Gardner, Howard (2006, November 10). Not intelligent Video Game. CQ Researcher, 16, 937-960. Retrieved July 15, 2009, from CQ Researcher Online, http://library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/cqresrre2006111000.
Summary: majority of video games possesses no educational value; therefore playing the game is a waste of time and techinically could lower intelligence because video games causes one to avoid learning more or doing something conservative.
Synthesis: Most of all my articles only stated video games that concern violent, witchcraft, and gruesome material. Obviously, this kind of material does not one bit enhance the knowledge of a teen. This and many more sources explains that being addicted to this dangerous material may affect the gamer in real life.
Critique: Again, I believe this source completely because i have many friends who are so addicted to online gaming that i witnessed their intelligence and conervative abilities drown down. Their grades were extremely low and they became more shy and uninvoled with the world. All this is from my prior knowledge.

  2. Question: How is the internet to blam for teenage obesity?

Hypothesis: The internet shouldn't be to blame for teenage obesity unless the obese teen is addicted.

Source 3: Staroversky, Ivan. "Computer, Games and Internet Addiction." Staroversky. 15 July 2009 http://www.staroversky.com/teenagers/games-and-internet-addiction.html.
Summary: This article speaks mainly about internet addiction. Internet addiction is much like any other addiction; it can consume all of ones time and energy. It tends to take over the teen's life; it leads them to lie in order to get to the computer, decreasing effort in school, less physical activity, and even depression.
Synthesis: This article is similar to my second article, since it also talks about internet addiction. They both give very informative information about being information to the internet. The only difference to this one was that, this article was more focused on teenagers, while the other one was focused towards people in general.
Critique: This source may be the most border line source. I personally do trust it, and it is made by a psychiatrist, but it doesn't seem like the best.

Source 4: "Teen Obesity." Palo Alto Medical Foundation. 2008. 15 July 2009 http://ww.pamf.org/teen/health/diseases/obesity.html.
Summary: This article is about how teenage obesity is greatly rising in today's society. It doesn't exactly relate obesity to the internet, however it does say that it is partly because of a lack of physical activity, which is due to the internet.
Synthesis: This article was also like my first article about teen obesity. It is about teen obesity in America and how it is a huge issue. However, the first one is more about obesity in general and the new one is about the effect of obesity.
Critique: I believe that this source is very reliable because it is a foundation, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. This is a famous organization that devotes itself to health care. Also, last year I did many projects on teen obesity and the information on this site matches up with what I have previously learned.

  3. Question: Should children with emotional problems be allowed to use the internet chat-rooms/facebook/myspace despite all the cyber-predators present?

Hypothesis: I believe that if a teenager suffers from an emotional problem (loneliness, "misunderstood," gullible, etc) then they should be very wary/ not participate in online chat-rooms and myspace.

Source #3: Aniston, Sophia, and Drew Price. "Debate: Is MySpace a safe Internet venue for teens?" HELIUM. 2009. 15 July 2009 http://www.helium.com/debates/65950-is-myspace-a-safe-internet-venue-for-teens/side_by_side?page=15
summary: This source was basically a debate between many average people about whether or not myspace is safe. I discovered many interesting points that I would most likely have to research further to test its credibility.
synthesis: This source provided a lot of reasons why it is/ is not safe for emotional children to be on myspace. One woman said that myspace is safe because it doesn't allow members under 14. Another man raises some interesting questions like, "Are you willing to moniter your children to assure they are not revealing info to possible predators."
Credibility: This site is a .com site, therefore everyone is allowed to leave their opinion. The information I gathered here may not all be completely accurate, which is why I plan to further research some of these interesting ideas. From prior knowledge I know that some of these facts are true, but I would rather be safe continue to look for more support.

synthesis: This is similar to my second source; it gives further feedback
critique: I can trust this site because it was written by a man named Gregory Weber. Weber happens to be an Assistant General for the State of Wisconsin. It is said that he specializes in the prosecution of crimes committed against children.

  5. Question: Does teen internet addiction cause obesity in teenagers?

Hypothesis: Teenage internet addiction is a major cause to teenage obesity, and should be acted upon before the problem worsens.

    Source 3:
"What is Internet Addiction." Center For Internet Addiction Recovery. 2006. 13 July 2009 http://www.netaddiction.com/whatis.htm

Summary: This website is similar to my first one. However, it gives more facts and symptoms of internet addiction. It says that not only teenagers abuse the internet and that it is a serious problem.

Synthesis: This website is focused as a whole community and does not specify on teenagers. However, it has interesting information about how safe the internet is.

Critique: I feel that this website is a credible one because it is a center to cure internet addiction. Also, the leader of the website is a doctor and deals with internet addictions around the world.

    Source 4:
Greenblatt, Alan. "Obesity Epidemic." CQ Researcher. 31 Jan. 2003. 13 July 2009 http://library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/document.php?id=cqresrre2003013100&type=hitlist&num=0.

Summary: This website is similar to my second one because it talks about teenage obesity. It talks about different ways kids become obese and one is from internet games addiction. At the end it talks about the problems and how it effects everyone in the country.

Synthesis: This website focuses on teenage obesity and is very informative. My second website is more broad on obesity while this one is specific on teenage obesity.

Critique: I feel that this source is reliable because the school offers it at the library page. This to me signifies that it is a credible site. Also, its work cited comes from doctors research and scientist experiments.

  6. Question: Are today's teens "cybersmart," and if not, what can society do to increase internet safety awareness?

Hypothesis: Though many teens may practice cyber safety on social networking sites, hundreds of thousands of teens are unaware of the online privacy dangers, and can perhaps be enlightened through school courses.

"Summary of Findings | Pew Internet & American Life Project." Pew Internet & American Life Project. 15 July 2009 http://www.pewinternet.org/Reports/2007/Teens-Privacy-and-Online-Social-Networks.aspx?r=1

Summary: This site talks mostly about teens and the social network sites. It is very helpful and includes lots of statistics. Also, it states the pros of teens having a social networking page. Also it says that more and more teens are being cybersafe.
Synthesis: My second website is more of the antagonist source when it comes to teens being safe online. This site however provides hope that teens just might be thinking about their decisions.
Critique: I definitely feel this is a reliable source because it is based on a study performed. It includes lots of statistical evidence that will helps to inform me about the issue.

  7. Question: How does internet usage contribute to mental problems?
Hypothesis: Excessive internet usage may cause depression and isolation, however, with the right balance, it can also be beneficial.
    Source 3
Bibliography: Young ,Kimberly S., ,Rodgers Robert C. “The Relationship between Depression and Internet Addiction.” Center for Internet Addiction Recovery. 2006. Center from Internet Addiction Recovery. 15 July 2009. < http://www.netaddiction.com/articles/cyberpsychology.htm>.

Summary: This article conveys the relationship between depression and internet addiction. The objective of this study was to assess depression and compare such results to other established dual diagnostic populations. With the prior knowledge of the possibilities that excessive internet use may lead to mental problems, a research consisting of doing a survey on addict and non-addict users was done. The result showed that addict users spends about thirty-eight hours or more on the internet and occupational type of workers seems to be affected the most. A Back Depression Inventory was used to assess the level of depression. Through the numbers of addicted internet users, the majority of them are diagnosed with a mild level of depression.

Synthesis: Like many of the article I’ve seen, this article talks about the how the excessive use of internet can lead to depression. However, this report tends to focus more on studies, surveys, and experiment that was done on actual addictive users. The whole method, procedure, and result were also stated in details. At the end of the report, analysis through the results and prior knowledge was used to relate depression with addictive internet use. As compared to other articles, in which contents of information and knowledge is presented without much detailed evidence of studies.

Critique: I believe in this article because the references it used were from reliable sources such as Psychological Associations and institutes. In addition, this study was done by a doctor and posted on an internet addiction recovery site.

    Source 4-
Bibliography: Young ,Kimberly S. “Internet Addiction: Symptoms, Evaluation, and Treatment. ” Center for Internet Addiction Recovery. 2006 Center from Internet Addiction Recovery. 15 July 2009. < http://www.netaddiction.com/articles/symptoms.htm>.

Summary: This article mainly focuses on the issue of internet addiction to its signs of symptoms, consequences, and treatment for it. Symptoms include , feeling preoccupied with the Internet, moody, depressed, or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop Internet use, needing to use the Internet with increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction, staying on-line longer than originally intended, jeopardized or risked the loss of significant relationship, job, educational or career opportunity because of the Internet, and using the Internet as a way of escaping from problems or of relieving a helpless, anxious, or guilty sensation. It also stated negative consequences that included family, relationship, academic, mental and occupational problems. Depression and social isolation is the most common mental problems.
Synthesis: Similar to other articles about internet addiction, it conveys a message of internet addiction and its relation with mental health problems. However, this article differs from other article in several ways. It does not just provide, researches, studies and analysis or discussions, the article also mention issues about its symptoms, negative consequences, treatments, and evaluations. Aside from that, real stories of addict users are also revealed. Most importantly, the symptoms and negative consequences were given in different perspectives.
Critique: I believe in this article because the references it used were from reliable sources such as psychological books, associations, academies and institutes. In addition, this studytoo, was done by a doctor and posted on an internet addiction recovery site.

  8. Question: Why does anonymity give people the confidence to do things online that they would not do in real life?

Hypothesis: Being anonymous gives people a sense of freedom; knowing that no one will know what they are doing enables them to express their true feelings and desires, some of which are not socially acceptable.

    Source 3
Palme, Jacob. "Anonymity on the Internet." 15 July 200. www.people.dvsu.su.se

This article talks about the pros and cons of being able to act anonymously on the internet. Some of the pros include allowing people to express themselves exactly as they are, without having to be socially appropriate. This, however, works both ways. This article is similar to others in that it agrees with the notion that anonymity makes people act in new ways. I believe that this is a reliable article because it utilizes a large number of references, cites specific facts, and makes sense.

    Source 4
"By the Water Cooler in Cyberspace, the Talk Turns Ugly. New York Times. 29 April 2001. 15 July 2009

This article gives some specific examples of the way anonymity can be harmful to persons and businesses alike. It tells of disgruntled employees as well as cruelty among co-workers. This article really relates well to source 3, as it supports that anonymity can cause people to express cruel and hurtful feelings that they would otherwise keep to themselves. I feel that this article is reliable because it gives many real life examples as well as being from a respected newspaper.

  9. Question: Do social networking sites affect the outside life of a teenager?

Hypothesis: Social networking sites affect the outside life of a teenager becuase they are addicting and potentially dangerous.

    Source #3
Kornblum, Janet. "USATODAY.com - Teens hang out at MySpace." News, Travel, Weather, Entertainment, Sports, Technology, U.S. & World - USATODAY.com. 9 Jan. 2006. 16 July 2009 (HTML)
Summary: This article basically told me that more and more teens are hanging out on MySpace. Not only are they making their own pages and adding friends, but most spend more than two hours on them a night. They also state that most teenagers feel safe on MySpace although they give out too much personal information which is dangerous. By becoming addicted, they neglect the people outside of the Internet. Also, but putting up personal information, they are just asking for predators to knock at their door.
Synthesis: Like the other two sources, this article explains that social networking sites are addictive and take teenagers away from their outside lives. Teenagers neglect family and friends because of Internet use. They are also calling for Internet predators. This article also provides questions that help answer my question.
Critique: I feel that this source is very reliable because it comes from a well-known and widely read newspaper. This article can also be supported by other facts from the other sources I have.

    Source #4
Gordon, Serena. "Teens Divulge Risky Behavior on Social Networking Sites -washingtonpost.com."Washingtonpost.com - nation, world, technology and Washington area news and headlines. 6 Jan. 2009. 16 July 2009 (HTML)
Summary: This article is basically showing me that teenagers do put out personal information on the Internet. This will affect the outside life of a teenager because online predators are allowed to see certain aspects of their life that are meant to be kept private such as school, age, hometown, etc. This article explained how about 54% of teenagers who have a MySpace of Facebook page have potentially harmful information on them. It also contains quotes from professionals commenting on how teenagers expose their lives to the world. It stresses for the government to put limiations on social networking sites so teenagers won't fall into predators traps or become to addicted.
Synthesis: Like source numer one from CQ Researcher, this article stresses on how personal information can lead to a bad situation. Teenagers are being asked online to meet up with people they have never met and are agreeing. This is a big invasion of privacy and affects the family life of a teen. Once they meet someone online who provides them comfort, they will neglect their family and friends. From giving out information to random strangers, they are allowing themselves to fall into social decline and dangerous situations.
Critique: I feel this is a reliable source becuase it comes from The Washington Post which is a widely-read newspaper. Also, this article is recent so it has accurate studies and quotes.

  10. Is it possible that social networking, helps teen's in school? If so how?

Hypothesis: It could be used for bloging. Shools and teachers are already using blogging for school purposes.

Source 3:"Teens & Social Networking in School & Public Libraries". Young Adult Library Services Association. http://www.ila.org/netsafe/SocialNetworkingToolkit.pdf

Summary: "Teens & Social Networking in School & Public Libraries" suggested that social networking is a good thing for school. It also gave examples like a math teacher subscribing blogs to his students. So they can post notes and other school work. The article also had three more sections that tried teens and the community about social networking.

Synthesis: This article like other articles I've read explained alot on the
"pros" of social networking, but the difference in this article is that it gives alot more examples of blogging.

Critique: I believe in this article because the reasons and anwsers it puts forth sounds like and looks like what the student's in your are doing. So it's like personal truth. On the site, near the contents the article says "for nearly 50 years YALSA has been the world leader in recommending reading listening and viewing for teens".

Source 4: Robert Andrews."Don't Tell Your parents: School embrace Myspace".http://www.wired.com/culture/education/news/2007/04/myspaceforschool. 04.19.07.

Summary:This article suggest that Myspace, Bebo, and Facebook are good for students, in fact even the teachers have a profile. The University of Brighton uses Elgg, a social networking site. Alot of in the school turors, students, and even reseachers has a profile. This article shows that technology is changing and we need to keep up with it.

Synthesis: Like the first article this one suggest that social networking is a good thing for school, but this article is more narrow and it just explains about one society using social networks, insteads of including everyone.

Critique: I believe that this source is accountable because It uses a School to help explain the article. The artticle revolves around the University of Brighton.

  11. Question: How does the internet lead to teens becoming anti-social?

Hypothesis: As the internet grows, things like social networks are made as faster ways of communication causing the internet to be more easier and helpful.

    Source 3:
bibliography: Lenhart, Amanda. "Adults and Social Network Websites" Pewinternet. July 15, 2009
summary: in this article it talks about how the percentage of people who have gone on the internet has increased over the past several years and the percentage of people that use social networks.
synthesis: like many other articles, this one talks about how the amount of internet users is increasing over the years and how social networks are very effective.
critique: i think this article is very trustworthy since this came from a .org site. The website also focuses towards technology and takes polls about them. The author of the article is also very credible since she directs the research for technology with teens.

    Source 4:
bibliography: "What's so Great About the Internet, Anyways?" Pewinternet. July 15, 2009

synthesis: this is another article that talks about how bad the internet is for kids. it also states how being addicted to the internet does affect the people around them.
critique: i think this is a credible site since it is a .org site. also this website is sponsored by the CRC health group which is the nations leading provider of treatment of different types of addictions.

  12. Question: Is the Internet more dangerous than the real world?
Hypothesis: The Internet is not more dangerous than the real world; it is the uncertainty felt towards the vast unknown of the Internet that makes it seem more dangerous.

    Source 3:
“National Survey Shows Parents Deeply Fearful About the Internet’s Influence on Their Children.” 3 May 1999. Office of University Communications. 15 July 2009. http://www.upenn.edu/pennnews/article.php?id=508
Summary: While parents generally think that the Internet is an aid for schoolwork, they are wary of the eminent dangers online. A few of their major claims include displaying personal information, viewing sexual content, anti-social behavior, and an interference in morals. For the Internet, two of three submissions revolve around its dangers.
Synthesis: From prior resources, some of the parent's worrying is unnecessary. Four out of five parents worry about their teenagers posting personal information. However, only about two-thirds posted their first name and age with much less posting their full name. In addition, teenagers have been seen to communicate online mostly with friends that they know.
Critique: I think that this is a credible site not only because it is a .edu. When I asked my parents about their take upon the issues, they feel into the majorities. They agreed that it was great for schoolwork but felt the need to monitor my brother and my activity online. It is also is from the University of Pennsylvania's website. Although it may not be the most recent source, it is still reliable; if it was not, the Internet controversy would not be as heavily researched anymore.

    2009. http://myhealth.ucsd.edu/healthnews/healthday/090629HD628463.htm
Summary: While the title implies cyber bullying, the article defines bullying in general, including physical and verbal bullying. The article also explains that bullying is prevalent during middle school. It showed that physical and verbal bullying were both more prominent than cyber bullying. The article ends by giving tips to reduce bullying.
Synthesis: In accordance with my hypothesis, cyber bullying is not as common a problem as physical and verbal bullying, demonstrating that the Internet is not more dangerous than the real world. All of these forms of harassment fall under the same category, bullying, which means that the problems that are faced on the Internet are similar to the ones we face on a daily basis. For further inference, cyber bullying may have taken the spotlight due to it being a relatively new problem that receives much media attention.
Critique: This source seems reliable. It is a .edu site using information from a survey conducted by the World Health Organization. The article comes from the University of Minnesota Extension.

Hypothesis: Internet can detriment a child’s growth

Source 3: Elisabeth Engelberg, Lennart Sjöberg. CyberPsychology & Behavior - 7(1):41." Feb. 2004. Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. publishers. 15 July 2009 http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/abs/10.1089/109493104322820101.
Summary: Internet brings a negative influence on a child’s growth and is time consuming which affects normal functioning of the social world. Researchers think that instant messaging can increase loneliness but may help in a person’s social skill. This article does not want the reader to focus on internet usage, but to mainly focus on the user and their social ability.
Synthesize: This article is different because it comes straight out of a book. My other sources from the internet suggest that frequent users of the internet shows depression.

Supporters of social networking say, teenagers benefit from social networks because it helps them to meet people they would not usually converse with in reality.
Synthesize: This article relates to my other sources because they both discuss the pros and

    Summary:
This article is saying that online gaming addiction leads to more violent behavior and poor academic grades.
    Synthesis:
It is agreeing with my second source which suggested that playing violent video games influenced teens to behave more violently.
Critique: I think this source is credible because it has many statistics with graphs of the studies and surveys done on teenagers. It is also published by a college, so i think it is credible

Summary: This article says that video games are just another form of media that has become a big part of our lives. It has the potential to have positive as well as negative effects on the players. It also says that studies show video games affect behavior.
    Synthesis:
Again, the part about video games affecting behavior agrees with the other two sources about violence. But it also talks about new ideas such as governments regulating video game addiction.

Summary: The Chinese government prohibited electroshock therapy because it has not been proven to cure internet addiction.

Synthesis:Unlike my third source, this source is a bit less hopeful that teens are responsible enough to make good online decisions. It is very useful in answering the second part of my question.
Critique: This is a site based only on teen safety. It is very helpful, and I trust that it has liable information because it talks about different scientific studies.
